Chapter 16

Road Trip

“Everybody in and buckled up?” Jean asked after they’d all piled into the black Crown Victoria on Saturday morning. Spence sat in front with Jon; she settled in back with Wheezy and Legs. Wheezy dangled his shoes over the hump in the middle, looking more like a ventriloquist’s mouthpiece than a brilliant piano player. “Can you see, Wheezy?”

“Get you one of them booster seats the little kids use at the drive-in,” Legs said, pointing his long thumb at Wheezy.

“Yeah, yeah. Ha-ha. The G-man up there almost had to rent a stretch limo to fit you,” Wheezy snapped back.

“Got enough room, Legs?” Spence glided the seat forward with an electric whir, stopping when the mechanism reached its limit.

“Pay no mind. Pay no mind. I’m good. Used to eatin’ my knees.”

“So, G-man, how much does this bucket of bolts cost us hard-working taxpayers, anyway?” Wheezy laughed.

“Do I have to endure this for the next three hours, Beevers? Are you going to bust my chops all the way to Seattle?” Jon glanced into the rearview mirror and grimaced.

“Depends. If we get to stop for lunch—maybe a juicy steak—I’ll cut you a break.”

“I might go for one of those, yes, I could,” Legs added, elbowing Wheezy. “And runny eggs.”

“All right—enough.” Jon put the car into drive. He rolled down the window. The thin flap of wispy hair on Wheezy’s head stood up straight.

“Put some glass in the hole,” Wheezy shouted. “Or Jean needs to give me a squirt of her girly goo to hold down my ’do.” He licked his fingers and smoothed the tendril over his otherwise bald head.
